Dietary and Microbial Derived Bioactive Compounds: Impact on Gastrointestinal Mucosal Health

Date
May 20, 2024

SOCIETY: AGA Natural products obtained from diet or microbial derived metabolites are increasingly gaining attention for their potential therapeutic potential in gastro-intestinal disorders. These metabolites range from aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands present in cruciferous vegetables, flavonoids, tryptophan derived metabolites, short chain fatty acids from microbial fermentation of undigestible fibers or microbially modified metabolites such as secondary bile acids. An increased understanding of how these metabolites affect the host intestinal mucosal processes is essential to harness their therapeutic potential fully. This symposium aims to bring together key advances in the field by highlighting complex interactions of microbiota and production of metabolites with mechanisms relevant to gut mucosal health and diseases.
