Sarah McGill is Associate Professor of Medicine and a gastroenterologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She conducts multidisciplinary research in alpha-gal syndrome, artificial intelligence in colonoscopy and the gut microbiome. In 2021, she was the first gastroenterologist to describe gastrointestinal alpha-gal syndrome in the GI literature, ie alpha-gal syndrome that presents with predominant or isolated GI symptoms. Alpha-gal syndrome is a tickborne condition that can cause delayed allergic reactions following ingestion of mammalian meat or mammalian products, and may present with recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or vomiting alone. She continues to research and increase awareness of this condition. |
