gastrointestinal tranck produces and experienses different mechanical forces originated from gut peristaltics, fluid flow, osmotic pressure, etc. All these mechnaical forces are senced by varios cells and regulate cell responses and tissue homeostatis. Furthrmore, GI tissue mechnaics is profoungly changed during gastrointestinal diseases contributing to the disease pathogenesis. This symposium highlights the roles of mechanical forces in regulating gut physiology and diseases. It encompases several emerging topics, such as mechanosensitive channels in gut epithelium, roles of mechnaical forces in stem cell fate and differentiation, and role of mechnaical forces in the regulation of gut microbiota. It also describes the roles of altered physical environment in gastrointestinal cancer development and how inhibition of mechnosensitive signaling pathways could lead to new therapeutic strategies to treat colonic and pancreatic cancer. This session should be of interest to a a broud community of basic and translational gastroenterologists and bioingenneres who want to learn about exciting research development at the interface of the GI physiolohy/pathophysiology and physics/biomechanics.
