Chronic abdominal pain is a common, bothersome symptom that is associated with a significant healthcare and economic burden, greater GI symptom severity, chronic pain and psychiatric comorbidity, poorer health related quality of life, and increased use of opioids. Patients are often not satisfied with available treatments. Chronic abdominal pain in practice is often due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia or centrally mediated abdominal pain syndrome. This session will review the diagnostic approach and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments of chronic abdominal pain.
