LAPAROSCOPIC ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS WITH AND WITHOUT GASTRIC RING AND WEIGHT- PROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY
Date
May 18, 2024
Objective: To assess the long term follow-up of weight loss and maintenance of lean body mass (ideal weight/weight loss maintenance) following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgical procedure with or without the use of a gastric ring
Method: An observational cohort study with a retrospective approach of a prospective data base was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of RYGB with and without gastric ring in patients with morbid obesity. The evaluation of outcomes was performed by analyzing data obtained from medical records, including pre-operative and post-operative data.
Results: A total of 239 patients who underwent surgery between 2001 and 2018 were included, with 150 undergoing RYGB without a ring and 89 with the use of a ring. The group subjected to the intervention with a ring showed a significantly higher average BMI loss compared to the group without a ring (Coefficient -2.45; 95% CI -3.92 to -0.97, p < 0.001) in one year. After a follow-up period of five years, the use of gastric ring was still associated with significant improvement in weight loss , even after multivariate adjustment ( Coef 6.62 , IC 95 % { + 4.30 - + 8.95 }, p<0.001 ). Less than 5 % of patients need gastric ring removal during the follow-up period.
Conclusion: In this study of 239 patients, the use of gastric ring in RYGB was associated with a significant increase in weight loss and maintenance of lean body mass.
BACKGROUND: Despite the advances in the multidisciplinary treatment of gastric adenocarcinoma, the overall 5-year survival remains only 33.3% in North America. R0 resection with adequate lymphadenectomy remains the mainstay therapy…
Gastric cancer after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass for surgical treatment of obesity has presented an increase in incidence in the last decades. Around 77 % of cases are diagnosed in the excluded stomach , usually in advanced stages…
Toupet fundoplication (TF) has been shown to have fewer adverse effects compared to Nissen fundoplication (NF), however, it is unknown whether the advantages of TF persist when comparing outcomes by the distensibility of post-fundoplication lower esophageal sphincter (LES)…
