Experiencing acute gut inflammation causes long lasting changes in gut functions due to neuroplasticity induced in neural circuits controlling gut functions. Although it is generally accepted that these changes are a major contributor to gut motor dysfunction and pain that persist beyond inflammation in IBS and IBS, the understanding of the cellular mechanisms that take place are incompletely understood. The purpose of this session is to highlight cutting-edge research investigating cellular mechanisms of neuroplasticity in gut neurocircuits that control motor function and pain.
