Extraesophageal manifestations are increasingly common presentations of of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) to the gastroenterologists' office. These may involve both the upper and lower airway, including laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) and pulmonary complications, such as lung fibrosis or allograft rejection in lung transplantation. Extraesophageal reflux may have substantial impact on patients' quality of life and, with pulmonary complications, even mortality. However, diagnosis and management of these conditions are challenging, with substantial healthcare cost/burden. This session will discuss the relationship between esophageal dysfunction and airway diseases, and review the clinical evaluation and management approach to extraesophageal reflux.
