Society: AGA

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) often coexist with structural gastrointestinal disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Many patients with active IBD exhibit symptoms similar to IBS or other DGBI. Additionally, a subset of patients with inactive or treated IBD continue to experience symptoms indicative of IBS or other DGBI. The pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying this overlap remain poorly understood. Clinically, these patients present treatment challenges due to the complexities in diagnosing and managing the coexistence of DGBI with IBD.
