Dr. Baron received his M.D. from the University of Florida, Gainesville (1986). He completed Internal Medicine training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed 2 years of Gastroenterology training at UAB where he worked closely with Dr. Basil Hirschowitz, the creator of the fiberoptic endoscope. Dr. Baron then completed pancreaticobiliary endoscopy training at Duke University Medical Center under the directorship of Dr. Peter Cotton. He was a faculty member at UAB from 1993-1998. From 1998-2013 he was Professor of Medicine and Director of Pancreaticobiliary Endoscopy at Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota and was awarded the Henry S. Plummer distinguished clinician award in 2012. In 2010, he received the ASGE Master Endoscopist award. Since 2014, Dr. Baron has served as Professor of Medicine and Director of Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his skills in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and received the prestigious ASGE Schindler Award in 2023.
He has more than 740 PubMed citations including primary author of six New England Journal of Medicine citations, and lead editor of the textbook ERCP, 4th edition release in 2024. Dr. Baron has travelled to over 30 countries to lecture about and/or perform endoscopic procedures.
