This session will explore the impact of diet and nutrition on the composition and function of the gut microbiome in both health and disease. Attendees will learn how dietary components shape the gut microbiome, how native diets influence microbiomes across global populations, and the mechanisms by which dietary modulation affects intestinal inflammation. Presentations will cover topics such as aryl-hydrocarbons and the microbiome, nutritional modulation in metabolic diseases, the impact of dietary migration on IBD incidence, and the role of microbially derived branched-chain fatty acids in regulating colonic permeability in protein malnutrition. Additionally, the session will discuss the correlation between breath methane levels and fecal abundance of Methanobrevibacter smithii following a two-week exclusive oral elemental diet.
