Marcia (aka Mimi) was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. After specialized training in Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, she became director of therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, quickly achieving international recognition as an academic endoscopist. She was promoted to professor of medicine and oncology in 2011 as a clinical investigator, program builder, mentor, and clinician. She received the ASGE Mentoring Award in 2020, the ASGE Master of ASGE Award in 2022, and the German Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Award in 2022. She has published over 300 publications. Her research involves therapeutic endoscopy, advanced endoscopic imaging, and endoscopic ultrasonography. She is an authority on Barrett’s esophagus and screening, endoscopic therapy for GERD, and early detection of pancreatic cancer in high-risk individuals. She has published many clinical and translational studies on pancreatic cancer screening and surveillance in the last 25+ years to move pancreatic cancer screening from a research idea to an accepted clinical practice in the United States and around the world.
