B. Joseph Elmunzer, MD, MSc is the Chief of Gastroenterology and Co-Director of the Center for Digestive Health and Surgery at Atrium Health-Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has a busy clinical practice that focuses on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP, EUS (including interventional endosonography), endoscopic mucosal resection and ablation, luminal stenting and recanalization, endoluminal suturing, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). In parallel, he is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded investigator whose research interests include clinical trials in gastrointestinal endoscopy and improving the safety of ERCP. He has spearheaded or substantively contributed to several large-scale multicenter randomized trials that have meaningfully impacted clinical practice worldwide. He is engaged in a series of research initiatives that aim to continue bringing important scientific discoveries to the forefront of clinical practice.
